It was cellular pioneer Motorola that developed the first truly handheld mobile phone – the 8000 series. In 1983, the Dynatec 8000x launched in the US with a price tag of $3,995 and just half an hour of talktime. The 8500X arrived in the UK four years later and quickly became a must-have for any City boy or yuppie – it cost £1,200. It was made famous when wide boy character Del Boy brandished one in the BBC comedy Only Fools And Horses.
