In 1987 Nokia, which had been developing bulky phones for the Nordic Mobile Telephone (NMT) service, which shad begun operating in 1981, unveiled the Mobira Cityman. It cost the equivalent of €4,560 and weighed 800g. It became known as the Gorba when later in 1987 Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev was pictured using a Cityman to make a call from Helsinki to his communications minister in Moscow.
