In 1996 Motorola hit back at the new European handset upstarts with the StarTAC, the world’s first "clamshell" phone. At the time it was the world’s smallest and lightest phone – at 88g – and had four hours of talk time, 47 hours of standby battery power and a vibrating ringer.
