Un viento cálido transporta las cenizas de una llama que se apaga en la tierra de los tuaregs, el Sahara. Elwan –que significa elefante–, el nuevo álbum de Tinariwen, hace referencia a los paquidermos de la política responsables de la injusta historia de este pueblo nómada. Por esto, los precursores del estilo ishumar han preparado una oda sublime al desierto y un lamento al despojo de su territorio con sus clásicas guitarras eléctricas.

What has become of the Ténéré
The Ténéré* has become an upland of thorns
Where elephants fight each other
Crushing tender grass under foot.
The gazelles have found refuge high in the mountains
The birds no longer return to their nests at night
The camps have all fled.
You can read the bitterness on the faces of the innocents
During this difficult and bruising time
In which all solidarity has gone.
The strongest impose their will
And leave the weakest behind
Many have died battling for twisted ends.
And joy has abandoned us
Exhausted by all this duplicity.
* Ténéré is a Tamashek word meaning empty land or desert. The plural of the word is tinariwen.

Cuando los conocimos en 2014 en Tanzania era fácil prever la trayectoria exitosa que tendrían estos embajadores y diplomáticos de la música. El conjunto, bajo la dirección del egipcio Mina Girgis, continúa con su formación de 13 músicos procedentes de Burundi, Egipto, Etiopía, Kenia, Ruanda, Sudán y Uganda. Su segundo trabajo se titula Jinja, lugar donde se encuentran las fuentes de El Nilo, río que da nombre a la formación.

Han pasado ocho años desde que la maliense Oumou Sangaré no sacaba disco. La potencia de su voz y su mensaje son inviolables y ahora, con un nuevo sello, No format!, y un nuevo equipo de producción, presenta Mogoya, un álbum basado en la rica herencia musical de Malí, junto a instrumentos que se inclinan hacia el futuro, como los sintetizadores. El legendario batería nigeriano Tony Allen participa en un tema.
